After seven long years of grinding with his music while cutting hair as a barber, V.I.C's hard work is finally paying off. The Georgia native first impressed the hip-hop world with his dance-infused track "Get Silly," featuring Soulja Boy. Not only did "Get Silly" reach no. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; it remains one of the top selling ringtones. The young V.I.C. then performed at the 2008 BET Awards, and has since appeared in The Source and XXL magazines. His second single off his debut album, Beast, is "Wobble," takes a page out of the old school, sounding eerily similar to the classic "Doing Tha Butt" by E.U.
Starting the album off, you hear V.I.C. chanting "Ooh Ah / Ooh Ah / Ooh Ah" on the intro titled "Beast," followed by boasts about taking over the music industry. "Like 50, I create more Ja Rules / I'm killing this game so blind / that it's so clear to see it's my time," he raps over a heavy bass. "Bop, Bop, Bop" is an infectious track that is reminiscent of the sound that Cash Money's Hot Boys made popular back in the late '90s. On the track, V.I.C. comes with the expected braggadocios about his expertise in the ladies department: "I Bop, Bop, Bop / I'm tha man girlfriend / Like damn you should lose your man girlfriend / Cuz if he ain't poppin' it / Coochie wall throbbin' it / Heart stopping it / Then your man ain't me."
On the caped-crusader cut "We Ridin'," featuring Hurricane Chris, V.I.C. raps about cruising in lavish cars with gaudy rims, and Lamborghini doors. "With them Batman doors poking out wide / So if you standing in my way / You might get clothes tied," he raps. Hurricane Chris makes a brief appearance on this track, capturin the theme of the song perfectly with lines like, "Na... Na... Na.../ Blam, Blam / Batman doors with the trunk on slam / Hanging out the window, hollering I don't give a damn." "Jaw Jacking" features Port Arthur's own Bun B of UGK, who provides some grown man swagger as V.I.C. talks slick to haters and anyone questioning his knack for making good music. While he's proved he can land a hit single, he's got a little ways to go before the rapper can prove he's consistent at it.
All in all, Beastis an admiral attempt by a talented young rapper. V.I.C. has a lot of room for artistic growth. However, a lot of his debut's tracks are of the norm, and more so follow trends than being original. But, his hunger for greatness and prowess for crafting addictive air pleasers is a solid foundation to build on.
