Ronnie Fieg’s brainchild in KITH took the form of a lifestyle brand and retail emporium in 2011. Since then, the New York-based clothing company has become one of the most prominent streetwear labels in the culture today. KITH has curated some of the most sought after collaborations with the world’s top product creators including adidas, ASICS, BAPE and more.
Recently, the retail empire established a weekly mini drop collection every Monday called the “Monday Program.” In honor of the late Dr. Maya Angelou, KITH has teamed up with Branded Arts and Dr. Maya Angelou High School for a limited edition capsule collection to serve and raise awareness for public schools’ under-funded arts programs across the nation.
Breaking Down The Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School x KITH Capsule Collection
Initially, Fieg and his team redesigned the school’s logo into a rising phoenix that reads ‘MAYA’ concealed within its feathers. The gradient phoenix represents an ode to Angelou’s notorious Still I Rise poem that has become an American literary staple.
The Maya Angelou x KITH Capsule Collection features monochromatic black and white tees/long sleeves/hoodies that feature an elegant image of the activist across the chest of the garments. The back of the garbs feature inspiring quotes from throughout the civil right activist’s triumphant life as well as Angelou’s signature. Some of those affirmations include sayings such as:
“I got my own back.”
“Prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future and renders the present inaccessible.”
“Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
How The Dr. Maya Angelou Community High School x KITH Capsule Collection Benefits The Arts
1,500 of the shirts and hoodies from the collection were directly donated exclusively to the students of the institution. Also, 100% of the proceeds from this particular Monday Program Capsule Collection will directly benefit Maya Angelou High School to expand the academy’s arts program.
