Here at Ballerstatus, we’re given the opportunity to test-drive the latest models from a number of car brands. Most recently, we had a chance to get some hands-on time with the brand new 2021 Trailblazer.
After more than a decade since we last saw the Trailblazer, it returns, but much different from we last remember it. This time around, the Trailblazer is a subcompact crossover… and a little less beefy than before.
Offered in four trims — LS, LT, Activ and RS — we were delivered the AWD ACTIV, which boasts a more rugged look, while the RS is a little more sporty. Our model came with a ECOTEC 1.3L Turbo and a 9-Speed Automatic transmission, pushing out 155 horsepower, which is surprisingly responsive. The nine-speed automatic transmission is tuned for fuel economy, allowing EPA ratings of 26 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined for this engine.
There’s four drive modes: Normal, Sport, Snow and AWD. Sport changes the transmission’s shift, giving it a different feel while driving. There’ also a Snow mode for those that live in a cold-weather climate, making the throttle less aggressive.
The ACTIV model also comes with exclusive features to enhance overall vehicle performance, including uniquely tuned dampers, Sport Terrain 17-inch tires with all-season design, improved ground clearance and underbody shielding, and spacious enough interior with 40/60 rear seats that fold down to allow for ample cargo space.
Overall, the new Trailblazer is a fun vehicle to drive. It has enough horsepower to be responsive and a cool look to make it appealing to various age groups. There’s other vehicles for a lot less in the subcompact SUV segment that are comparable. Whether or not you choose the Trailblazer is all up to you.
The 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer starts at $19,995. Ours, however — the 2021 Trailblazer AWD ACTIV — comes in at $32,350.
Special thanks to Chevrolet for providing us the vehicle, insurance and tank of gas for this review.
