An iPhone 17 Pro fell out of the stratosphere over Arctic Sweden with no parachute and no protective housing. It tumbled for about 25 minutes before hitting the ground. Five hours later, a search team found it in the wilderness — and it still powered on, still made calls, still took photos.
That stunt earned RhinoShield and UK aerospace outfit Sent Into Space a Guinness World Records title for the highest drop of a mobile phone in a phone case (natural landforms). The phone was released at 30,607 meters — 100,418 feet, by Guinness’s official measurement — above the Esrange Space Center near Kiruna, Sweden, on June 24. That’s more than three times the altitude a commercial airliner cruises at, and more than triple the height of Everest.
The case doing the work was the AirX Ultra-Cushioned, and that’s the part worth pausing on: it wasn’t a prototype. It wasn’t a reinforced one-off built for the camera. It was the same case anyone can buy right now, starting at $62.99.
The Guinness Rules Made This Harder Than It Sounds
The obvious skepticism is that a phone falling from 100,000 feet doesn’t actually hit the ground at 100,000-feet speed. Terminal velocity is terminal velocity, and a tumbling phone in thick air isn’t moving dramatically faster than one dropped off a tall building. Fair point, and worth saying out loud.
But Guinness didn’t hand this one over easy. Per the adjudication guidelines, parachutes were flatly prohibited, and the case itself had to make first contact with the ground — no lucky bounce off a corner, no landing screen-up in soft moss. The case had to eat the impact.
The phone also had to survive the trip up. Near-space conditions ran between –40°C and –60°C with atmospheric pressure at roughly 1% of what you get at sea level, and RhinoShield sent no heating equipment or secondary shielding along for the ride. The case was the only thing between an iPhone 17 Pro and the edge of space.
For scale on how far outside normal testing this sits: RhinoShield’s standard lab drop tests run about 1.2 meters. When the company wants to get aggressive, it drops phones off its sixth-floor office — roughly 23 meters. The stratosphere is over a thousand times higher than that.
Finding the Phone Took Five Hours
The launch partner matters here. Sent Into Space has been flying payloads into the upper stratosphere out of Sheffield since 2011, with more than 2,000 launches and a 100% recovery record. They recommended Esrange, which sits inside a restricted drop zone roughly twice the size of Luxembourg.
That’s by design — the phone was aimed at uninhabited wilderness specifically so nobody underneath it got hurt. It also meant that once the thing landed, somebody had to go get it.
GPS narrowed the search radius to about two kilometers. It still took more than five hours to find the phone. Helicopter payload limits meant only four people could join the initial search: two Sent Into Space engineers with tracking gear, and two videographers. Everyone else waited on the ground.
When they found it, the case was intact and the phone worked. Guinness adjudicator Juliet Dawson reviewed the video evidence, the witness accounts, and the device itself before confirming every essential function still ran, with the exterior undamaged.
Dr. Chris Rose, Sent Into Space’s co-founder, was blunt in RhinoShield’s announcement about how much was unknown going in — beyond the cold and the descent itself, the team was fighting communication interference, remote terrain, and the very real possibility of never locating the phone at all. Recovering both the case and the device was the only way to prove anything.
What’s Actually Inside the RhinoShield AirX
Strip away the stunt and the AirX is a genuinely unusual piece of engineering, mostly because of what it’s trying to prevent.
Most cases are built around damage you can see — cracked glass, scuffed aluminum, a dented corner. AirX targets the damage you can’t: internal wear that shifts a camera lens enough to wreck optical image stabilization, misaligns antenna components until your 5G goes flaky, or deforms a battery into a slow failure. That’s the stuff that makes a phone feel old before it is.
The system runs on RhinoShield’s proprietary ShockSpread material and works in two stages. An Air Isolation Chamber wraps the phone in 360° cushioning that behaves like an airbag — it traps impact energy in a sealed chamber and bleeds it off through compression and rebound instead of transmitting it straight through to the device. Behind that sits what RhinoShield calls a Compression Skeleton, a structural layer that routes force away from the phone’s most fragile zones. Buttons are embedded inside the chamber rather than punched through it, closing off one of the most common failure points in a side-impact drop.
The company claims the setup isolates up to 81% of impact force under its own test conditions, with roughly 30x the durability of a conventional case across repeated drops. Those are manufacturer figures, not independent lab results — worth knowing, worth not treating as gospel. The design itself has picked up outside validation, though: AirX took both a 2026 iF Design Award and a Red Dot.
If you’ve followed the protective-case space at all, this is a familiar pitch executed unusually well. We’ve covered rugged cases built from recycled materials before, and the tension between armor and aesthetics has been the category’s defining problem for a decade.
The Real Argument: One Material, Fully Recyclable
Here’s what’s underneath the spectacle. Almost every protective case on the market is a composite — hard polycarbonate shell bonded to soft TPU, sometimes with a third material layered in. That construction protects well and recycles terribly, because you can’t separate the layers at end of life. Billions of cases a year effectively become landfill after a single use cycle.
RhinoShield has built on a mono-material philosophy since 2017, and AirX is the flagship test of whether that principle survives contact with real performance demands. One material. 100% recyclable. Dropped from space.
“Circular design does not have to mean compromise,” said Eric Wang, RhinoShield’s co-founder and CEO.
The brand also says its full case portfolio has tested with no detectable bisphenols or PFAS through independent third-party labs, and it’s been building out collection infrastructure — 11 company stores in Taiwan plus more than 4,300 FamilyMart drop-off points, with mail-back programs running in the US, UK, France, and Germany.
To mark the record, RhinoShield is rolling out a run of space-themed AirX designs. Which, fine — the collab-driven case market has trained everyone to expect a graphics drop attached to every milestone.
Should You Actually Buy the AirX?
World-record marketing stunts are marketing stunts. Nobody’s dropping their phone from 100,000 feet, and the case that survives the stratosphere isn’t automatically the case that survives your kitchen tile at 4 a.m.
At $62.99 the AirX is priced above a Spigen and roughly in line with an Otterbox Defender, so the question is whether the internal-damage angle is worth the premium over a case that just keeps your glass from cracking. If you’re rough on phones, keep them four or five years, and have ever had a camera go soft or a battery start behaving strangely after a bad drop, the argument lands. If you replace your phone on contract every two years and mostly need scratch protection, you’re paying for engineering you won’t use.
What’s actually notable is the framing. RhinoShield didn’t build a special case to win a record — it took a shelf product, submitted to a governing body’s rules, let an adjudicator verify the result, and used the whole thing to argue that recyclable and rugged aren’t opposing forces. Compared to the protective gear category’s usual habit of shouting drop-height numbers with no verification behind them, that’s a harder flex to pull off — and the one worth paying attention to.
