With fall settling in and Día de los Muertos around the corner, Bozal Cempasúchil is back—and no matter the season, this limited-edition mezcal is worth celebrating. Part of Bozal’s premium Reserva line, the Cempasúchil release is an homage to heritage, craftsmanship, and the enduring spirit of Mexico’s ancestral traditions.

Ancestral Method, Timeless Craft

Crafted in Oaxaca from 100% wild Espadín agave, Bozal Cempasúchil is made using the ancestral method—a rare and labor-intensive process that only a small fraction of mezcals follow. Agave hearts are roasted in underground pit ovens, hand-crushed with wooden mallets, naturally fermented in open-air wooden vats, and double-distilled in clay pot stills. The result is a mezcal that preserves the raw character of the land, the plant, and the mezcalero’s skill.

This level of dedication is why the Ancestral classification is considered sacred among mezcal drinkers. Every sip reflects authenticity, patience, and a respect for tradition.

The Marigold Connection

What makes this expression even more special is the infusion. During the final distillation, cempasúchil flowers (Mexican marigolds) and mandarin peels are placed at the bottom of the still. The marigold—known as the “flower of the dead”—is central to Día de los Muertos traditions, believed to guide spirits back to their loved ones. Paired with the brightness of mandarin, this mezcal carries both flavor and deep symbolism.

Tasting Notes (47% ABV)

  • Aroma: Bright citrus and marigold florals with hints of allspice
  • Palate: Green pepper, orange zest, nutmeg, and anise, layered with herbal complexity
  • Finish: Subtle smokiness balanced by black pepper, fading into a smooth, lingering aftertaste

Design and Presentation

Each bottle of Bozal Cempasúchil is as striking as the liquid inside. The mezcal comes in a black ceramic bottle engraved with marigold motifs, a design that nods to both Día de los Muertos iconography and the traditional terra cotta vessels once used to hold mezcal. The tactile details make every bottle a collector-worthy piece.
